Barca chasing Chelsea’s Luiz

Barcelona have made Chelsea defender David Luiz one of their main summer targets, according to the Daily Mirror, as the Catalans look for an alternative after missing out on Roma’s 19-year-old centre-back Marquinhos, who will join Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea have been rumoured to be considering the sale of Luiz this summer, with the club denying offering him as part of their bid to bring Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge. Now, SPORT has claimed that Barcelona’s sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta, has made contact with Luiz’s agent to register his interest.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho has said that Luiz would not be sold this summer, contrary to some reports, though the interest from Barcelona has intensified since their failure to sign Marquinhos. Tito Vilanova’s side have been after a central defender for some time, losing out on Luiz’s international teammate Thiago Silva last summer, also to the riches of PSG.

Luiz joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2011, and has been a key player during his time with the Blues, helping them win the Champions League for the first time, in 2012, and last season’s Europa League, scoring two goals in the competition.
