Manchester United look like missing out on Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara after Bayern Munich made a late effort to re-unite the Spain youth international with former boss Pep Guardiola, according to the
Thiago was expected to sign in at Old Trafford in an effort to play regular, high-level football in an attempt to win a place in the senior Spain side for next year’s World Cup, but Guardiola has lured the 22-year-old to the Champions League winners instead, it appears.
The Mail claims Guardiola will make room for Thiago at Bayern by using Javi Martinez as a central defender rather than a midfielder, but Thiago will still be competing with the likes of Mario Gotze and Toni Kroos for a place alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben.
Spain Coach Vicente Del Bosque had previously advised Thiago to remain at Barcelona and reject the overtures from United manager David Moyes, who wanted the Italy-born son of former Brazil international Mazinho to breathe new life into the club’s midfield. United are said to still be hopeful Thiago plumps for the Premier League as Moyes seeks re-enforcements for Anderson and Darren Fletcher, and a replacement for the retiring Paul Scholes.
