Cardiff make big offer for Caulker but Tottenham want more

Premier League new boys Cardiff City have made a substantial offer for Tottenham Hotspur defender Steven Caulker, the Daily Mail has reported, but Spurs have insisted the Welsh club up the bid for the England international.

Cardiff tabled an approach worth £8m but have been told by Tottenham to come back with a bid of £12m if they want to sign the centre-back, the newspaper claims. The Bluebirds are considering using add-ons and instalments in an effort to come to terms with Tottenham’s demands.

Caulker has also attracted interest from Liverpool and Manchester City this summer, the Mail claims, but it is Cardiff who have been most strident in their advances. Malky Mackay had wanted to sign Hector Moreno from Espanyol, with Swansea also interested in the player, but the Spanish club turned down Cardiff’s offer.

With Andre Villas-Boas ready to sign Romania’s Vlad Chiriches in a £6m deal and showing an interest in Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori, Caulker’s playing time at White Hart Lane is likely to be limited in the coming season. That’s despite Caulker making his senior England bow in November 2012, scoring on debut in defeat to Sweden. The 21-year-old Caulker also spent a year on loan at Swansea, Cardiff’s fierce rivals.
