Carrick sees six-way Premier League title fight as Man Utd seek to retain

Michael Carrick believes the coming season’s Premier League title race will be the most competitive ever, ESPN has reported, as the midfielder warns Manchester United will be only one of six teams fighting for top spot.

Carrick has won five league titles in his seven seasons at Old Trafford and helped Sir Alex Ferguson sign off with another trophy last year, cantering home ahead of former champions and local rivals Manchester City. But Carrick expects City and Chelsea, who finished third last year, to offer greater competition next season – and warns Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur will be involved as well.

In the end, the last few years, it’s been similar teams up there with us. City and Chelsea changing managers, there is a different feel about it, but its strong squads and the best teams that come to the top and hopefully we will be right up there,” Carrick said.

He added: “It’s certainly going to be tough because there are five or six teams now that fancy their chances at the title or certainly the top two or three, so we will have to be as good if not better than ever.
