Charity game announced for former Newcastle keeper Harper

Ex-Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper’s 20 years of service for the club will be celebrated in a charity match at St. James’ Park in September, Sky Sports has reported, with several legends of the game confirmed to be taking part.

The match will take place on September 11, with a Newcastle team comprising the likes of record scorer Alan Shearer, and fellow striker Les Ferdinand, taking on an Milan side which will include Paulo Maldini and Andriy Shevchenko, among others. The proceeds will go to three different charities, the Great North Children’s Hospital, the Newcastle United foundation, and the Sir Bobby Robson foundation.

Harper ended his long Magpies career on the final day of last season in the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. That was his 199th appearance, after spending much of his two decades with the club as second choice, with ‘keepers such as Shay Given and Tim Krul being preferred. He has now moved on to Hull City.

And Harper said: “I had a fantastic send-off against Arsenal at the end of last season, so this is really my opportunity to say thank you to a region which has given me so much support and to use my time to raise as much money as possible for three incredible causes.
