Chelsea believe Wayne Rooney is destined to leave Manchester United for Stamford Bridge before the close of the summer transfer window, the
United host Chelsea at Old Trafford on August 26 but Rooney is not likely to be a Chelsea player by that point. The match is also David Moyes’ first at home since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson, as the former Everton boss begins his tenure at United in the Community Shield at Wembley against Wigan Athletic, with the league programme taking Moyes’ team to Swansea City on the opening weekend.
Mourinho has been reluctant to speak directly about Rooney while on Chelsea’s tour of Asia but the newspaper claims Chelsea are of the belief that United will have to sell Rooney before the September 2 transfer deadline. Mourinho has previously admitted Rooney is his primary target for the summer as the Portuguese seeks competition for Romelu Lukaku and Fernando Torres.
Rooney has grown unsettled at United after Ferguson left him out of the starting XI for high-profile fixtures last season, and made a habit of withdrawing Rooney early from games he did start. Ferguson also claimed Rooney had issued a transfer request, a claim denied by Rooney, but the England striker is understood to have made it clear over the summer that he does wish to leave his current club despite United’s insistence that he is not for sale.
