Chelsea encouraged in De Rossi pursuit as Roma sign replacement

Chelsea have received good news in their pursuit of Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi, the Daily Mirror has reported, as the Serie A club are close to signing PSV Eindhoven midfielder Kevin Strootman, viewed as a replacement for the Italy international.

Roma would only consent to selling De Rossi once they finalised a deal to sign his replacement but it has been confirmed by PSV that Strootman is likely to join the Italian club in a £15m transfer.

That move frees up De Rossi to head to Stamford Bridge – but Roma are also asking that Chelsea include Brazilian right-back Wallace in a loan agreement. Wallace completed his move to London from Fluminense this summer after it was agreed in the winter transfer window.

De Rossi, 29, would sign a four-year contract under Jose Mourinho, who is said to value the experience offered by the World Cup winner. De Rossi would form the midfield axis in partnership with 35-year-old Frank Lampard although another summer midfield arrival, Marco van Ginkel, will be groomed as Lampard’s successor.

Since making his Roma debut in the Champions League in 2001, De Rossi has gone on to play more than 400 games for Il Lupi, winning the Coppa Italia twice and five times finishing as runner-up in the league. He also 90 appearances for Italy to his name.
