Chelsea open talks with Mata over new contract

Chelsea fans have been handed a welcome boost before the start of the new Premier League campaign, as ESPN are reporting that midfielder Juan Mata is close to signing a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

It is thought that the contract is a measure that has been taken by the Blues to ward off any interested parties and to finally put an end to any speculation regarding the Spain international’s future.

The 25-year-old has been the subject of a number of rumours this summer, the latest claiming that Chelsea were ready to send him the other way in a bid to prise Wayne Rooney from Manchester United.

The winger’s current Blues deal is up in 2016, but Chelsea want to extend his stay at the Bridge until 2018 as well as offering him a wage hike from £70,000 to £100,000-a-week.

It is being claimed that Mourinho’s position regarding Mata has changed since the former Valencia playmaker was linked with Barcelona earlier in the window. It is thought that the Portuguese boss wouldn’t let on regarding his plans for Mata; however he has since sent a string of compliments his way.
