Chelsea to be without Mata, Torres and Azpilicueta for Premier League opener

Chelsea will be without their trio of Spain internationals for the first Premier League game of the new season, the Guardian has reported, as Juan Mata, Fernando Torres and Cesar Azpilicueta will only return from Ecuador the day before Jose Mourinho’s side play newly-promoted Hull City.

The squad for the fixture has yet to be confirmed but Mata, Torres and Azpilicueta are expected to be included for the match in Guayaquil on August 14, the same night England host Scotland at Wembley. Chelsea play Hull that weekend in the opening league game of the season and although their match takes place on Sunday due to television broadcast, Mourinho expects all three Spain players to be unable to feature against the Tigers from kick-off.

My line-up will depend a lot on which players go away with their national teams two days before the opening of the Premier League,” Mourinho said, adding: “If one has to go to Ecuador and comes back and arrives in London on Saturday without having slept after a 15-hour flight, coming in to train on Saturday morning, I don’t think he is going to play on Sunday.

If a player plays for England on Wednesday against Scotland, let’s say plays for 45 minutes at Wembley and then an hour after the game he is at home in Cobham sleeping, he is in a better condition to play. The team will be decided game after game and week after week,” the Portuguese continued.

All three of Chelsea’s Spanish contingent has had a hectic summer of travel, having been named by Vicente del Bosque in the squad to play at the Confederations Cup. Spain reached the final of the competition but lost to hosts Brazil.

Mourinho also pointed to the uncertainty over the date of Chelsea’s match against Aston Villa, which was originally set for the weekend of August 30. Chelsea are however playing in the European Super Cup on that date so the game is likely to be brought forward to the first week of the season, but as yet a date has not been confirmed.
