Chelsea to let Ba join Anzhi as Mourinho moves for new striker

Demba Ba could be set for a move from Chelsea to Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala after turning down the chance to join West Brom or West Ham, the Daily Mirror has reported, with the former Newcastle striker a victim of Jose Mourinho’s desire to bring a new striker to Stamford Bridge.

Ba has only been a Chelsea player for six months, signed by Mourinho’s predecessor – interim manager Rafael Benitez – from Newcastle in January. The 28-year-old was offered the chance to remain in the Premier League with either the Baggies or the Hammers, but declined both offers, with a lucrative approach from Anzhi now expected.

Chelsea have already offloaded Marko Marin, who has joined Sevilla on loan, and John Obi Mikel is expected to depart for Galatasaray, as Mourinho rebuilds the squad ahead of his second spell as Chelsea boss.

Bayer Leverkusen forward Andre Schurrle has already joined the Blues and Chelsea are chasing Edinson Cavani, the Napoli attacker, and Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski, with a move for Wayne Rooney also a possibility. The signing of any one of the trio would spell the end for Ba, who netted six goals in 22 games in the latter half of the season.
