Chelsea to lodge Benteke bid

Jose Mourinho has identified Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke as the alternative to Edinson Cavani after Chelsea missed out on the Paris Saint-Germain-bound forward, Goal has reported.

Chelsea also face the prospect of seeing Robert Lewandowski remain at Borussia Dortmund for another year before joining Bayern Munich on a free transfer, leaving Mourinho frustrated in his attempts to bring a new attacker to Stamford Bridge.

But Benteke suits the Mourinho profile – a physical and athletic forward capable of playing as a lone striker – and Villa would be vulnerable to a hefty offer from Chelsea given their comparative lack of resources, the website claims.

Mourinho can already call on Fernando Torres and Demba Ba but neither player is particularly in the manager’s thoughts, with Ba made available for transfer and Torres on thin ice. Romelu Lukaku has returned to the club after a successful loan spell at West Bromwich Albion but Mourinho wants another option in attack. Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez is another option but Fiorentina are also chasing the Germany international.

Benteke joined Aston Villa from Genk a year ago, netting 19 times in his first season in English football, with all of the 22-year-old’s goals coming in the Premier League.
