Chelsea are to delay making another offer for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney until after Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial, which takes place next week, with the Blues looking for a hostile reception for the 27-year-old – should he play a part, reports ESPN.
After Rooney denied former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson’s claim that he had submitted a transfer request shortly before the end of last season – which saw him booed by some sections of the crowd during the final home game against Swansea – he was said to be ‘angry and confused’ after comments made by new manager David Moyes. Moyes appeared to suggest that Robin van Persie would be his first-choice striker for next season.
And with Chelsea set to bid up to £30m for Rooney the reception he may receive during next week’s match could have a large bearing on whether the England international does make the move to Stamford Bridge, while it might also overshadow the tribute to Ferdinand.
