22-year-old Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin has joined German Bundesliga side Freiburg on a season-long loan, after a lack of first-team opportunities with the Gunners, reports Goal.com.
As a result, the former French U-21 international has been mainly reduced to sporadic substitute appearances in the Premier League, and occasional starts in the cup competitions. Indeed, Coquelin appeared in 11 league matches last season for Arsenal, of which eight were from the bench.
And with Arsenal rumoured to be targeting more midfielders this summer, with Lars Bender and Marouane Fellaini both linked, Coquelin has decided to join Christian Streich’s side in order to gain more first-team opportunities.
Freiburg had an impressive season in the league last season, finishing 5th, and securing a berth in the UEFA Europa League for next season. Coquelin’s move represents his second loan spell from Arsenal since arriving from Laval in 2008, having had a spell at Lorient during the 2010-11 season.
