De Rossi made available by Roma with Chelsea circling

Daniele De Rossi will be allowed to leave Roma this summer, the Daily Mirror has reported, with Jose Mourinho keen to bring the Italy international to Chelsea.

Roma president James Pallota revealed that the club is not in a position to turn down reasonable offers for any of their players after failing to qualify for European football last season, opening the door for De Rossi to move to Stamford Bridge in a £10m deal.

A Roma youth product, De Rossi was long viewed as a future Roma captain but fell out with former manager Zdenek Zeman before the Czech was sacked, and lost the backing of the club’s supporters. Combined with Il Lupi’s need to sell this summer, and Chelsea are thought to be in a strong position to snap up the former Manchester City target.

Roberto Mancini wanted to take De Rossi to City a year ago while Mourinho tried to sign the 30-year-old for both Real Madrid and Inter, only to be rebuffed in each approach. If Mourinho is successful this time, however, it could hasten the end of John Obi Mikel’s time at Chelsea, as Mourinho would then need to sell to avoid an overabundance of midfielders in his squad.
