According to French magazine L’Equipe, Arsenal are to announce the signing of highly-rated Brazilian left winger Bernard on Friday, beating reported interest from several other Premier League clubs, the Daily
This development is somewhat surprising considering that Liverpool and arch-rivals Spurs were seemingly the leading English clubs in the race to sign the 20-year-old, who appeared for Brazil in this summer’s Confederations Cup, making two outings as a substitute. Other European clubs including FC Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk have also been linked.
But Brazilian reporter Alexandre Oliviera has broke the news of his switch to Arsenal, declaring: “Atletico Mineiro’s Bernard is going to join Arsenal.”
The deal is said to be £21m, with Bernard expected to arrive in London on Friday for a medical, and will then become Arsene Wenger’s second summer signing, after Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo. The club are also thought to be chasing Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez from Real Madrid and Liverpool respectively.
Bernard is set to play his last game for Atletico Mineiro, against Olimpia in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores, where they trail 2-0 from the first leg, later this week.
