Higuain stalls on Madrid exit to give Arsenal time to make improved offer

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has put the brakes on a move to Napoli in order to give Arsenal time to come back with a bigger offer, the Daily Mirror has reported.

The Premier League is said to be Higuain’s preferred destination but Napoli have had a £30m offer accepted by Madrid. The Gunners were close to capturing the Argentina international but baulked at paying a transfer fee that shot up from £24m to £32m, the Londoners claimed, having already agreed terms with Higuain.

Arsenal instead turned their attention to Liverpool’s unhappy Uruguayan, Luis Suarez, but if Madrid receive £30m from Rafael Benitez’s Napoli for Higuain, they would then spend that money on Suarez, who would prefer a move to Spain over a switch to England’s capital. That would mean Arsene Wenger missing out on his three top striker targets, with Wayne Rooney, the third, keen on a switch to Chelsea.

It had been claimed by the Arsenal hierarchy that they would not hesitate to spend money this summer after being criticised in the past for their perceived frugality – but as yet Arsenal have not bought the high-profile players their fans may have expected, the newspaper adds.
