Kagawa turned down Dortmund return in favour of Man Utd stay

Borussia Dortmund Coach Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he offered Shinji Kagawa the chance to return to the Bundesliga this summer, ESPN has reported, but the Japan international wanted to prove himself in the Premier League with Manchester United.

Klopp was seeking a replacement for Mario Gotze, who joined Bayern Munich, and turned to Kagawa even though he expected to be rejected. “It was clear relatively quickly, Shinji wants to prevail this year at Manchester United,” Klopp said. “I did not expect a different answer, you just have to ask even once.

Kagawa moved to United from Dortmund last summer having won consecutive titles in Germany under Klopp. He added a third straight championship with United but said at the end of the season that he felt his contribution to the success was lacking, having scored six times for United compared to the 29 he netted in two seasons with Dortmund.

Klopp has spoken out regarding Kagawa before, saying in May that Kagawa was being wasted in the role Sir Alex Ferguson was deploying him. “Shinji Kagawa is one of the best players in the world and he now plays 20 minutes at Manchester United – on the left wing!” Klopp said, adding: “My heart breaks. Really, I have tears in my eyes.
