Liverpool and Tottenham enter race for Brazil winger Bernard

Liverpool and Tottenham look set to do battle for Brazilian winger Bernard, according to a report on The Daily Mail’s website.

The two Premier League outfits are among a host of no less than five clubs vying for the £20m-rated player’s signature.

Reports have suggested that the 20-year-old is ready to quit current club Atletico Mineiro after the Copa Libertadores final second leg on Wednesday.

Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Dortmund are the other clubs believed to be chasing the Brazil international, and Liverpool will surely want to get one over on Dortmund with the Germans having snatched the Reds’ top target Henrikh Mkhitaryan from right under their noses earlier this summer – ironically from Shakhtar.

Bernard’s asking price is thought to be in excess of £20m, but Atletico Mineiro are thought to be ready to accept offers around £18m, having already rejected a Porto approach in the region of £15.5m.

Both Spurs and Liverpool remain concerned that their lack of Champions League status will put them at a disadvantage against the other clubs involved, but hope that the lure of the Premier League coupled with their European qualification aspirations for the following season may just be enough to bridge that deficit.
