Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre believes it is up to the club to show Luis Suarez why he should remain at Anfield, Sky
Speaking to Bloomberg Ayre added that he believes Suarez retains the support of the majority of Liverpool supporters – which would make it easier for the forward to remain at the club despite his proclamations this summer. “ I don’t think anyone will be against him at this point,” Ayre said.
“He only needs to do what he did last season and everyone will feel he’s in the right place and he should carry on getting the support that he deserves and gets from Liverpool,” Ayre added. “We’d love to see Luis put on a Liverpool shirt for this season and beyond and we hope that once he gets back things will settle down.”
Suarez has previously claimed that he wanted to leave English football altogether following his treatment by the media regarding a number of controversial incidents – such as the racism row with Patrice Evra and Suarez’s biting of Branislav Ivanovic, for which he is still serving a 10-game ban. Suarez was also involved in a confrontation with Fulham supporters during which he made an offensive gesture.
But the former Ajax captain’s mood appears to have softened regarding remaining in England, with Arsenal having a bid turned down by Liverpool earlier in July. And Ayre believes it is now down to Liverpool to show Suarez he can achieve his goals with his current employers.
“This is an ambitious young player, he’s talked in the media about wanting to play in the Champions League and all these things. It’s our job to convince Luis that this is the right place to achieve those things,” Ayre said.
