Liverpool have met with Pare Guardiola, the agent of unsettled striker Luis Suarez, in an effort to keep the Uruguay international at Anfield, the
The talks were arranged before Arsenal made a £30m offer for Suarez, a bid that was rejected by Liverpool. Representing the Reds was manager Brendan Rodgers and managing director Ian Ayre, with the meeting held in the shadow of not only the offer from the Gunners but also comments from Suarez’s international teammate Edinson Cavani in which the Paris Saint-Germain-bound striker urged Suarez to move to a club playing in the Champions League.
“Luis has to be playing Champions League football,” Cavani said. “When you have the most complete striker in the world not playing in the top competition in Europe, then you know something is not right. He deserves the Champions League and the Champions League deserves him.”
Cavani continued: “Real Madrid are a great team; Chelsea are a great team and Arsenal are a great team – but the most important thing is that they can offer him consistent Champions League football, which is not something Liverpool have been able to do.
“I can tell you his love for Liverpool is very real. If they were playing in the Champions League, he would not consider leaving. But he knows he is now at the stage of his career that he needs to be playing at the top level.”
Suarez is said to want to move to Madrid and it has not yet been decided if he will join Liverpool on their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia. The Mail adds that thus far Arsenal are the only club to lodge a formal offer for Suarez but it fell short of the £40m clause in Suarez’s contract that allows the player to speak to the interested party.
