Former Liverpool winger John Barnes has said that Luis Suarez should be sold ‘sooner rather than later’, the Daily
Arsenal and Real Madrid are the favourites to land Suarez should he leave Anfield this summer, with the Gunners already having two large bids rejected for falling below Liverpool’s valuation. Earlier this summer Suarez said that he would like to join Real, although after he was informed of Arsenal’s bid he expressed his desire to talk to Arsene Wenger’s side.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and the club’s managing director, Ian Ayre, have both said it is their hope to keep the unsettled Suarez should no offer meet the asking price. But Barnes, who spent 10 years at Liverpool between 1987 and 1997 told Talksport that they should look to sell the 26-year-old immediately.
“We’ve seen in the past when transfers go down to the last minute that it doesn’t help anybody, especially for a club like Liverpool who, if they lose Suarez, would have to find a big name replacement,” Barnes said.
“I’d like it to be done sooner rather than later because if it goes down to the last day, and you then have to go and get somebody, it’s not ideal. As far as Suarez is concerned, if he’s not going to be happy, then he has to go.”
Suarez joined Liverpool in January 2011 as a replacement for Fernando Torres and has 51 goals in 96 appearances, but has often proved a controversial figure during his time at the club.
