Lowton to pen new Aston Villa deal

Aston Villa defender Matthew Lowton has impressed manager Paul Lambert so much so that the youngster is now in the midst of negotiating a new long-term contract at Villa Park. The Guardian are reporting that if a deal can be agreed the full-back will join the likes of Andi Weimann, Brad Guzan and Nathan Baker in committing his future to the club.

Lowton’s consistency of performance last season meant he put himself in contention for an England call-up, his form emphasised with a 25-yard screamer of volley in Villa’s 1-3 away win against Stoke in April, one of two goals for the defender last season.

Elsewhere at Villa Park want-away striker Christian Benteke has reported back for pre-season training after handing in a transfer request earlier in the year. The 22-year-old signed for the Villans from Genk last year and his 19 goals helped the Midlands club stave off the threat of relegation last term.

However his form last season and recent unrest has culminated in potential suitors clubs being alerted to his situation and now Tottenham are one of the club’s reported to be chasing the Belgian’s signature this summer.
