Man City Transfer Focus – Pellegrini to cast aside Maicon and add Negredo

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said on Tuesday in reaction to his side’s 2-0 pre-season friendly defeat to SuperSport in Pretoria that he will be looking to spend to reinforce his squad.

The Chilean manager claimed: “We are aware that we still need to bring in two or three more players. It is difficult to say which day, but before the end of the moth we will have a new striker.

Some reports are claiming the striker in question is Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo. Pellegrini is understood to be fond of the front man after watching him against his Malaga side last term. The 27-year-old scored 25 goals in La Liga last season, and Negredo also bagged six goals in 14 international appearances last season meaning that he is one of Europe’s hottest properties this summer.

However Sevilla are not believed to be in any rush to sell the player and so £23m could be the starting point for any potential buyers. The Daily Mirror are reporting that club president Jose Maria del Nido has said that either Man City should meet their asking price or the player will stay in Spain for another three years.

Other reports are still claiming that the missing goal-scorer from Pellegrini’s squad is Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic. However claims of this nature have died down over the last few days, with Negredo looking like the Chilean boss’ preferred option.

One striker who looks like he could be on the way out of the Etihad Stadium though is youngster John Guidetti. Talksport are reporting that the Sweden international could be heading back to the Eredivisie to link up with Feyenoord. The 21-year-old spent the 2011/12 campaign at the Dutch outfit and was a massive success, scoring 20 times in just 23 appearances for the club. It was thought that Guidetti would come back to Eastlands a first team contender but has since made just two appearances for the Blues.

Yet another City player looking like departing is defender Maicon, who is reportedly on the brink of making his way out of Manchester and returning to Italy with Roma. The Brazil international, signed by Roberto Mancini last summer, made just seven appearances for the Citizens, but now looks to be moving on after new manager Pellegini told him he has no future at the club and left him out of his touring squad to South Africa.

Pablo Zabaleta is another defender who could be moving on from the Etihad. Reports in the Daily Express are suggesting that the 28-year-old mainstay of the team has fallen victim of Pellegrini’s squad overhaul. They are claiming that the Argentine defender would favour a move to Serie A and has Fiorentina, Juventus and Milan in his sights.

The Daily Mirror are reporting that Man City have fended off competition from Chelsea and Liverpool to sign “the Dutch Patrick Viera,” Rodney Kongolo. Kongolo is expected to travel to Manchester this week in order to finalise a deal. The 15-year-old midfielder is highly-rated at Feyenoord, but could be allowed to leave for a fee as small as £500,000 in compensation payments.
