Man City to turn to Fred if Cavani moves elsewhere

Manchester City are keen to sign a striker this summer, the Daily Mirror has reported, and if Manuel Pellegrini cannot land Napoli’s Edinson Cavani, the newspaper claims he will turn to Brazil international Fred instead.

Fluminense have rejected the suggestion Fred could be on the move but the player is more open to a transfer, but only if the offer is a particularly attractive one. The 29-year-old has 18 months left on his contract, however, and City could treble Fred’s wages and make a bid that tempts his club into selling – a fee of £7m has been mooted.

Cavani remains City’s primary target, the Mirror believes, but the competition for the Uruguay international is fierce and City face losing out to Chelsea or Paris Saint-Germain. Oscar Cardozo, the Benfica striker, is another possible option, as City attempt to replace Carlos Tevez, who was allowed to join Juventus.

Fred has extensive experience of European football, having previously played in France for Lyon, and the centre-forward was one of Brazil’s star performers in their Confederations Cup triumph. Fred is also expected to lead the line for the hosts at next year’s World Cup.
