Man United dealt Alcantara blow as Guardiola admits Bayern interest

Man United face a blow in their chase for Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara, with former boss Pep Guardiola admitting he’d love to take the 22-year-old to Bayern Munich, according to The Sun.

The Catalan ace had looked set to secure a move to Old Trafford and become one of new United boss David Moyes’ first new signings at the club, with a deal having been expected to be announced by now.

However, former Barca coach Guardiola has admitted that he wants to take the Spanish international with him to the Bundesliga.

Guardiola, who had once been linked with the Man United job when Sir Alex Ferguson retired, said: ““I want Thiago Alcantara. I have asked Bayern to get him but I don’t know what will happen. Thiago is the only player I want, that’s what I told them.

“It’ll be him or no one. We have many players but we the need the special extra quality that Thiago Alcantara brings. I know Thiago very well. I talked to Rummenigge and Sammer about him, we will wait and then see.

“I don’t think adding another midfielder will be a problem for us. I spoke to club about my concept and told them why I want Thiago Alcantara. I give my opinion, but I listen to the board. If they say no, that’s ok.”

United have been keen to strengthen their midfield following the retirement of veteran Paul Scholes and uncertainty still shrouding the future of Darren Fletcher, and Alcantara’s move to Old Trafford had looked a sure-fire bet until Guardiola stoked the flames, giving the 22-year-old another option.
