Barcelona star Thiago Alcantara looks set to complete his £17m transfer to Man United this week, according to The
Alcantara now looks like he has a “good chance” of becoming new United boss David Moyes’ first signing at Old Trafford, though questions remain about whether or not the deal can be completed before the Reds jet off on their three-week pre-season tour of Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong on Wednesday.
Barcelona had appeared keen to keep hold of their Spanish international midfielder, and sought to offer assurances of first team football next season in a move that seemed to dent United’s hopes of landing their man.
However, the Premier League champions are keen to offer better terms than the 22-year-old’s current £30k per week arrangement in Spain, and the deal now appears to be back on.
It is believed Alcantara has been identified as a long-term replacement for recently retired Paul Scholes, as Moyes looks to re-tighten his midfield, especially amid continued concerns over the future of Darren Fletcher’s playing career.
Alcantara spent spells as a youth player at Flamengo (whom he initially joined as a four-year-old), Ureca and Kelme before returning to Flamengo. He joined the Barcelona youth ranks in 2005 before moving on to their B team, finally making his first team debut in 2009.
