Manchester United have entered the race to sign Cagliari’s Italian international defender Davide Astori, who is highly sought after by clubs across Europe, including Liverpool and AC Milan, according to Football
Liverpool were involved in a battle with Southampton in January for the 26-year-old centre-back, though Cagliari held firm. Now, however, a move appears more likely, and with Milan and Napoli involved in the pursuit, and Man Utd having entered the fray, Ivo Pulga’s side may be forced into selling one of their prized assets this summer.
David Moyes has so far made one signing since taking over the reins from Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, that of Guillermo Varela from Uruguayan side Penarol. He has been linked with some bigger names, including Barcelona star Thiago Alcantara, and Leighton Baines, whom he used to manage at Everton.
Astori was involved as part of Cesare Prandelli’s Italian squad for the Confederations Cup, making one appearance, against Uruguay in the third place play-off, where he managed to find the net. A fee in the region of £10m is likely to be enough for Cagliari, with the player admitting that he is likely to move this summer.
