Man Utd turn to Modric in midfielder search

Manchester United will offer Luka Modric a return to the Premier League a year after leaving Tottenham Hotspur, ESPN has reported, as David Moyes turns to Real Madrid’s Croatian playmaker in a further attempt to bolster the champions’ midfield.

Moyes first moved for Barcelona’s Thiago Alcantara but could not persuade the Spain Under-21 captain to move to Old Trafford, with Thiago joining Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich instead. Moyes then tried for Cesc Fabregas but has thus far been frustrated in his attempts to sign the ex-Arsenal midfielder, forcing Moyes to look elsewhere.

Modric has become the focus of Moyes’ attention now, it was claimed in the Times. with a £25m approach to Madrid in the offing. Modric was considered as a target at the start of the summer but United looked elsewhere because of a paucity of goals in Modric’s career, but Moyes has turned back to the 27-year-old after their other options proved fruitless.

ESPN adds that Modric said midway through last season that he would welcome a return to English football but much has changed at the Santiago Bernabeu since then. Carlo Ancelotti replaced Jose Mourinho as manager and the former Paris Saint-Germain boss is said to be a fan of Modric, who made more than 150 appearances for Spurs in four years at White Hart Lane.
