Martinez hails Everton signing Deulofeu

Roberto Martinez has hailed the talent of Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu, the Daily Mail has reported, after the 19-year-old became Martinez’s fourth signing as Everton manager.

Deulofeu joins Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles as new faces at Goodison Park after completing a season-long loan deal, with the quartet signed and sealed in little more than two days as Martinez re-shapes the Everton squad in his image.

And the former Wigan Athletic manager is particularly enthused by the capture of Deulofeu, eulogising the potential of the teenage forward. “Gerard is a real diamond of Spanish football and a boy with incredible footballing talent and I am delighted that he has chosen to take the next step of his career with Everton,” Martinez said.

He added: “He is a young man with a lot of potential to be a real star and the Everton family is the perfect environment for him to progress. The warmth, patience and understanding of Goodison Park is exactly what he needs to carry on fulfilling his potential.

The experience that we have in our dressing room will help him in his development and he will bring a completely different penetrating approach to our group. We understand a lot of other top clubs around Europe were interested in Gerard so it is fantastic he has joined us.

Deulofeu is one of Europe’s brightest prospects, the newspaper claims, and has been on the fringes of the Barcelona first team for the past two years, but with the Catalans having more experienced options in their senior squad, it was felt Deulofeu would benefit from time on loan as he attempts to step up from the Barca B team, for whom he scored 18 goals last season.
