Jose Mourinho has said that despite the recent arrival of veteran goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, Petr Cech will remain his No.1 between the posts, Sky
Cech has been Chelsea’s first-choice ‘keeper since the summer of 2004, when he arrived from Rennes. He made an immediate impression under Mourinho, and has gone on to make 292 Premier League appearances under eight managers, keeping an impressive 145 clean sheets.
Schwarzer, as Mourinho confirms, has been brought in as cover, with the highly-rated Thibaut Courtois about to spend a third consecutive season on loan with Atletico Madrid. Australia international Schwarzer recently left Chelsea’s West London neighbours Fulham after rejecting a new contract.
Chelsea themselves parted company with Henrique Hilario and Ross Turnbull in June, leaving 31-year-old Cech as their only senior goalkeeper at the time. After the signing of Schwarzer, Mourinho has declared himself happy with his options in goal, stating: “Mark is what we need. I always thought, even when I was not at Chelsea, that we have we have the best keeper in the world in Petr.
“But we need competition for him, motivation for him, security and I think Schwarzer is perfect for that. He has experience, has spent his whole career in the Premier League, so it’s his national habitat. Getting Mark on a free transfer, we have the goalkeeper to complete our set of goalkeepers.”
