Mourinho keeping calm as Chelsea chase Rooney

Jose Mourinho is said to be confident that Chelsea will sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United before the transfer deadline, the Daily Mirror has reported, despite the Premier League champions rejecting the Blues’ opening offer for the England international.

Chelsea saw a £20m bid for Rooney rejected earlier in July but the newspaper claims that privately, the Chelsea hierarchy are sure United will agree to sell the former Everton striker before the close of the transfer window, even though United manager David Moyes has repeatedly said he wants to keep Rooney at Old Trafford. A second approach from Chelsea is expected, with the fee on offer rising to £24m.

Mourinho has largely declined to speak publically about his interest in Rooney but revealed after the final game of Chelsea’s Asia tour that as yet, there has been no increased offer. “There is no transfer movement, no,” Mourinho confirmed.

At this moment we have done what you know, made that bid which was public and official. After that nothing else. But we are calm, as we told you that we are calm, because we are happy with what we have.

Mourinho was speaking after seeing his Chelsea side beat the Indonesia All-Stars 8-1, with goals from Eden Hazard, Demba Ba, John Terry and Bertrand Traore, while Ramires and Romelu Lukaku both scored twice. The hosts’ goal was also converted by a Chelsea player, defender Tomas Kalas putting through his own net.
