Newcastle close to Bent deal

The Daily Starare claiming that Alan Pardew is preparing a bid to make Aston Villa striker Darren Bent the first new face through the door at St James’ Park this summer.

The Magpies fly out to start their pre-season tour of Portugal on Thursday and many at the club, including the manager, are hoping that the deal can be done by the weekend.

Newcastle United are the only side in the Premier League not to have registered a new player at the club this summer. However Pardew believes the deal could be done while the squad are still in Portugal: “I expect to be down the road with a transfer while we are away,” said the ex-Southampton and West Ham man.

Bent endured a torrid season last year as he struggled to hold down his spot in the Villa first team, thanks in no small part to the form of Christian Benteke. However Magpies boss Pardew has made no secret of the fact he has been hunting a new front man after losing Demba Ba to Chelsea in January and now it seems that he feels Bent is the man to fill that role alongside Papiss Cisse.
