Newcastle end pursuit of Lyon’s Gomis

The Daily Telegraph is reporting that Newcastle United have ended negotiations with Lyon concerning their striker Bafetimbi Gomis, after seeing a bid in the region of £7m rejected by the French club.

The deal does remain on the table, however, but Gomis’ move to Newcastle is now appearing unlikely with Lyon hoping to receive a significantly larger amount of money, after the 27-year-old scored 20 goals in 44 appearances last season, his fourth with the club.

This represents the latest setback in Newcastle’s attempts to strengthen this summer, after the controversial appointment of former interim manager Joe Kinnear as director of football. The Magpies remain the only Premier League club not to have made any signings in the close-season, despite being linked with several players.

Strikers Darren Bent and Loic Remy, who are set to leave their respective clubs, have been among those mentioned but so far there has been no indication that a deal for either is close to being struck. That leaves Papiss Cisse and Shola Ameobi as the club’s only two recognised senior strikers.

And with the beginning of the new Premier League season just three weeks away there is more pressure on Kinnear and manager Alan Pardew to improve a squad that ended last season in 16th place.
