Newcastle target Villa’s Bent as top priority capture

Under-fire new Newcastle director of football Joe Kinnear returns from holidays this week, and will make the signing of Aston Villa striker Darren Bent his top priority, reports The Mirror.

Bent has long been linked with a move to the Toon Army, who are now the only Premier League club yet to sign a senior player this summer.

Following last season’s disappointing campaign, Kinnear is under pressure to make a breakthrough in the transfer market this week, and wants the former Sunderland striker at St. James’ Park to partner Papiss Cisse next season.

Villa are understood to remain firm in their stance when it comes to Bent’s £8m valuation, though they are clearly eager to offload the former Spurs man as they have him training with their reserve squad.

Newcastle are also understood to be fearful of losing prized asset Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain this summer, but hope that any surplus cash from the deal can be reinvested elsewhere in the squad.

Bent, meanwhile, is thought to be desperate to escape Villa Park this summer after being frozen out of the first team. He wants a move elsewhere in order to rejuvenate his stagnating career, and Newcastle are seen as the ideal destination, and so a deal is expected to be done sooner rather than later.
