Rodgers admits Reina was allowed to leave Liverpool to save wages

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted that Pepe Reina was allowed to leave Anfield in order to get him off the wage bill, according to ESPN.

Reina was earning a reported £110k per week at Liverpool, but was allowed to move to Napoli on a season-long loan deal, reuniting him with former Anfield boss Rafael Benitez.

Rodgers also said that is would have been unfair retaining Reina at the club to be understudy to new £9m goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, especially considering that the World Cup is a mere 11 months away now.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Rodgers said: “Financially it is something we needed to look at. That would be the reason because obviously you wouldn’t move on a top goalkeeper.

“It reared its head over the last few months and I had to prepare for it by bringing in a new goalkeeper. Pepe is a good guy. I’ve a lot of time for him, and he understands what I want to do totally. He’s got a big season ahead because it’s a World Cup year and one where, if he wasn’t going to be playing, could severely harm his chances of going.”

Reina has made 394 Liverpool appearances since joining the club eight years ago.
