Rooney a good fit for Chelsea, says Hazard

Eden Hazard believes that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney would be an excellent addition to the Chelsea squad, the Daily Telegraph has reported, as manager Jose Mourinho focuses on the England international after missing out on Napoli’s Edinson Cavani.

Cavani is expected to join another ex-Chelsea target Radamel Falcao in moving to French football – this time Paris Saint-Germain after Falcao’s move to Monaco – and Hazard is encouraged by his team’s pursuit of Rooney. The Belgium midfielder added that the players are aware of the speculation and would love to see Rooney sign in at Stamford Bridge.

We’ve heard all the names – it’s not up to us who comes in but it’s exciting,” Hazard said. “Rooney would be a brilliant signing. He’s a really great player who has the experience, and he’s still only young, at 27. He’s got a few years left to play. It’s always a pleasure to play with great players, and Chelsea sign great players.

As well as Rooney, Chelsea have been linked with Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, who recently confirmed he wanted to leave the Midlands. And Hazard believes Benteke would be ready to step up a level if he clinched a switch to Chelsea. “Benteke is my friend,” Hazard said. “He had an unbelievable first season for a young striker in the Premier League. His dream is to play even higher.

As for his decision, I think it’s the right one because he has the quality to impose himself wherever. We speak all the time and he’d told me: ‘Right, I’ve done well. What next?’ I think he’s got all the attributes to do well at a big club.

Benteke, a month younger than his countryman Hazard, scored 19 goals in his debut season in English football. Chelsea can already call on one powerful Belgium forward, Romelu Lukaku, who is due to lead the line in Chelsea’s early pre-season friendlies as Fernando Torres is on an extended break following the Confederations Cup.
