Former Man United fitness coach Mick Clegg has blasted striker Wayne Rooney ahead of the England striker’s crunch talks with new United boss David Moyes, reports the Daily
Clegg claims that Rooney was never as good as Ronaldo due to his hatred of spending time in the gym. He said: “Wayne didn’t see the importance of the gym really. He’d say, “I’m here to play football”. I always wish I could have pushed Wayne that bit further.
“Wayne was always a big lad and was afraid of bulking up if he spent too much time in the gym. That’s what set Cristiano Ronaldo apart. He would do whatever training I prescribed and more.
“He lived and breathed football 24/7 and his dedication was phenomenal. Wayne could still be as good as Cristiano if he emulated his attitude to the gym — he is an amazing athlete when he puts his mind to it.”
Rooney has experienced ups and downs during his near decade at Old Trafford, but arguably enjoyed his finest time in the five years he shared with the Portuguese star between 2004 and 2009.
Ronaldo has gone on to enjoy his reputation as one of the finest footballers in the world, while Rooney has struggled at times with fitness and evidently morale, despite a spell in the 2009-10 season when he appeared to be returning to the world class levels his early potential seemed to promise.
