Rooney would regret Man Utd exit, insists Ferdinand

Wayne Rooney would regret leaving Manchester United, according to Rio Ferdinand, with Ferdinand using the example of Cristiano Ronaldo in an effort to persuade Rooney to remain at Old Trafford, the Guardian has reported.

Rooney’s future has been the subject of much speculation this summer and the England international is said to be keen to leave his current club, but Ferdinand has warned Rooney about the perils of leaving United, arguing that not even Ronaldo, who moved to Real Madrid in 2009, enjoyed more success after his exit.

I don’t see where you go better from here, Ferdinand said. “For instance, Cristiano has been ridiculous as a football player individually, but has he won more trophies since leaving than what we’ve won?

That’s the way I look at it. I wouldn’t say that he shouldn’t have gone there; it was his dream to go there, so you have to respect that. But I just look at things in a black and white way: I want to win trophies so why would I leave here?

In the four years Ronaldo has spent at the Santiago Bernabeu he has claimed one La Liga title and one Copa Del Rey – whereas in the same period United have landed the Premier League on two occasions and reached the final of the Champions League in 2011.
