Smalling excited ahead of new season

Chris Smalling has said that it is good to be back and playing with the Manchester United squad on their pre-season Japanese tour. Talking in an interview with the United Website Smalling has outlined his stance on his injury-checkered past, his road back to fitness and the new manager. The England defender claims: “I can’t wait to get back on the pitch and enjoying my football again.”

The 23-year-old missed a good proportion of last season after he was ruled out following surgery on a broken metatarsal. The young full-back missed all of the club’s pre-season action and only made his full return to the squad in November, in United’s 3-1 win at Braga in the Champions League. However after shaking off his injury demons with help of reserve-team coach Warren Joyce and the reserve players, Smalling has been able to join up with the first-team in Japan.

Smalling has also said that the mentality at Old Trafford is the same as it always has been regardless of the changes in management and coaching. “It is the same core of players and we still have the same desire to win every competition we play in,” he said. Smalling since signing for the Red Devils has gone on to make 50 appearances scoring just one goal. He has also in his time at Old Trafford gone on to make his international bow.
