Tottenham Hotspur are facing competition from Premier League rivals Southampton for the signature of long-standing target Leandro Damiao, the
Saints Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed the club are interested in the Brazil international, who was forced to miss his country’s Confederations Cup triumph on home soil due to injury.
Tottenham have been strongly linked with Damiao in a number of past transfer windows but claimed recently they were no longer pursuing the Internacional centre-forward. Damiao’s agent has also revealed he is in talks with a Premier League club, with Pochettino confirming it is Southampton who have made an approach, with the fee likely to be in the region of £21m.
“We manage a lot of information about very good players. One of them is Damiao, also [Ever] Banega and also [Victor] Wanyama,” Pochettino said.
“We are managing the situation as well as we can at the moment. The main thing is that we as a club, Southampton, are managing when these negotiations happen so that is what is happening. We are managing when these players are going to be signed and how we sign them.”
Pochettino added that he was not troubled by the delay in bringing new faces to the South Coast, despite having originally aimed to complete all transfer business by the start of July. “Our goals are very clear,” Pochettino said. “I am also not trapped by the fact that I said I wanted to have our transfer window closed by July 1.
“We are not interested in 15 or 20 players. We are interested in maybe two or three key players.”
