Tottenham could be set to test the resolve of Aston Villa by cementing their interest in Christian Benteke by making a formal approach, reports The
Villa have said that nothing short of £25m in a straight cash deal would suffice for their striker, and also reaffirmed that they are not currently interested in taking a part-exchange deal for any Spurs player who may be being considered as a makeweight, but Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas appears to remain keen to test the strength of their stance.
The north Londoners also believe that Villa’s valuation of the striker is unrealistic, hence their offer below the asking price the midland club are thought to be holding out for.
They are also keen to offload striker Emmanuel Adebayore before the season commences, meaning that they are willing to offer the player a significant pay rise on his current Villa deal as well as offering the sweetener of guaranteed first team football.
Benteke handed in a transfer request to Villa on Monday, and was given extended leave by the club. He is not due to report for pre-season training until Thursday.
However, Spurs are thought to be set to make their first official bid before that time, and want a resolution to the discussions before the jet out for their pre-season tour of Hong Kong for the Barclays Asia Cup later this month.
