Tottenham Hotspur are close to announcing the signing of Barcelona striker David Villa, with a transfer fee having already been agreed, according to the Daily
Reports in the Spanish media suggest that the 31-year-old Villa, Spain’s record international scorer with 56 goals, is set to be announced as a Spurs player in the coming days, after a long period of speculation over his Barcelona future. Spurs appear to have seen off interest from Fiorentina to obtain Villa’s signature, while North London rivals Arsenal pursued him in January without success.
The Catalans have already signed Brazil star Neymar this summer, meaning that first-team opportunities at the Nou Camp are likely to be limited for Villa. Being in the final year of his contract, Barcelona are looking to cash in on Villa now.
Since being brought to Barcelona by Josep Guardiola three years ago, Villa has managed 48 goals in a trophy-laden spell, despite missing a long period of the 2011-12 season with injury.
In addition to Villa, Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas is also hoping to complete the signing of midfielder Paulinho, another of Brazil’s Confederations Cup winning team, with a fee of around £17m having been agreed with Corinthians.
