Sunderland seal deals for defensive duo

Paolo Di Canio has completed his first pieces of business in the transfer window as Sunderland manager. French defenders Valentin Roberge and Modibo Diakite have both joined the club, as well as Swiss midfielder Cabral. The defenders who measure 6ft 1inches and 6’4” respectively have joined the Black Cats to bolster their leaky defence.

Cabral has swapped Switzerland for England after impressing with FC Basel. The 24-year-old has already been part of four title-winning sides since beginning his career at Lausanne Sport. He was an integral part of Basel’s double-winning team last season and also helped them to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Sky Sports are reporting Roberge, who has an impressive back-catalogue of clubs including Guingamp, Paris Saint Germain and Maritimo, to be a 25-year-old centre-back who can also ply his trade on the left. While Diakite, 26, who has joined the club after leaving Lazio with 88 appearances for the club, is an intimidating prospect at the heart of the defence. The trio have all signed three-year deals with the Wearsiders.
