Tottenham chasing Newcastle target Gomis

While Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign striker Roberto Soldado from Valencia, they are also rivalling Newcastle United in race for Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis’ signature, according to Goal.

Tottenham have been after a striker all summer to add to their current options, Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe, and they have been hoping to sign Soldado. Thje Spain international scored 30 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions for Valencia last season, but 27-year-old Gomis is also on Andre Villas-Boas’ radar.

They face competition from Newcastle, along with other European clubs including Fiorentina, for the French international, who scored 20 goals in 45 games in 2012/13.

Since Alan Pardew took charge of the Magpies in December 2010, they have made considerable use of the French market, bringing in several players including Yohan Cabaye, Yoann Gouffran, Mapou Yanga Mbiwa, and Moussa Sissoko in recent seasons.

Gomis could perhaps be enticed by the number of French players in the Newcastle squad, which might enable him to settle quickly, but Spurs will offer European football and the possibility of the Champions League in seasons to come.
