Tottenham step up pursuit of Aston Villa striker Benteke

Tottenham Hotspur will return to their pursuit of Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, the Daily Mirror has reported, and hope to partner the Belgium international with Barcelona forward David Villa.

Villa’s move from La Liga to Spurs has been cleared by Fiorentina turning their attention to Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez, with Tottenham Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas guaranteeing Villa first team football ahead of next year’s World Cup. The 31-year-old is keen to play regularly in order to safeguard his place in Vicente Del Bosque’s squad.

Tottenham’s move for Benteke rests on the player not yet signing a new contract at Villa Park, despite Aston Villa insisting they will not sell the 22-year-old this summer. Spurs have offered Jermain Defoe in a part-exchange deal for Benteke, but Villa have put a minimum asking price of £25m on Benteke’s head in an effort to ward off any interested parties.

Benteke scored 19 goals in his debut season in the Premier League, following a £7m move from Genk last summer. Atletico Madrid are another of the clubs hoping to prise the centre-forward away from the Midlands, having sold Radamel Falcao to Monaco.
