Ajax allow Eriksen to speak to Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have moved a step closer to signing Ajax playmaker Christian Eriksen, Yahoo Sports has reported, after the Dutch club allowed the Premier League side’s chairman, Daniel Levy, to speak with the player about moving to London.

It is understood that Tottenham have offered in the region of £8m for the Denmark midfielder, below Ajax’s valuation, but while the two sides come to terms over the fee the player has held talks with his proposed new club.

Ajax’s director of football, former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars, confirmed Eriksen was in talks with Spurs to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. He said: “Yes, Levy was here and Eriksen has been given permission to speak to Tottenham.

There is no agreement yet until it’s signed, Overmars added. “Obviously, if it happens, we won’t be happy at all to lose him but he only has a year left on his contract.

Eriksen has been with the Amsterdam club since 2008, joining as a teenager, and the prospect of him moving to White Hart Lane has been welcomed by Jan Vertonghen, the former Ajax captain who made the same journey a year ago. “He is a good guy,” Vertonghen said, adding: “ I played with him for four years and he is a good player.

Spurs are also expected to complete the signing of Romania defender Vlad Chiriches in an £8.5m move from Steaua Bucharest.
