Arsenal are being rivalled by Napoli for the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo, the
The Gunners are still said to be favourites to sign the Brazil international, the newspaper claims, but the Serie A side have made a late attempt to persuade Gustavo to move to Italy, not England. Gustavo is said to be keen to leave Munich in an effort to get regular playing time ahead of next year’s World Cup in an attempt to force his way into the Brazil squad for the tournament, to be held in the South American country.
Gustavo’s place at Bayern has been lost due to Pep Guardiola’s preferred way of playing, with Spain midfielder Javi Martinez taking the only berth for a defensive midfielder. Gustavo admitted while on international duty with Brazil that he is looking to leave Bayern to safeguard his international future. “My contract with Bayern runs until 2015 but it is very important that I play first-team football to keep getting called up for Brazil,” Gustavo said.
“I am in a very delicate situation at Bayern and this needs sorting out. I have personal and professional reasons to move. I have heard about the Arsenal interest. It’s a big club we’re talking about here so of course I’d like to play for them,” he added.
Napoli previously swooped for Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain, signing the Argentina striker from Real Madrid despite the Gunners appearing close to completing the transfer.
