The Gunners have had two offers rejected for the Uruguay international and are still considering a third, closer to Liverpool’s £50m price tag, but have started to put in place contingency plans should the Reds stand firm in their stance that Suarez is not for sale.

Wayne Rooney was briefly considered by Wenger but it is Michu and Dzeko the manager has made his Plan B, the Mail adds. In his first season in the Premier League, Michu, 27, scored 18 goals, netting a total of 22 in all competitions as the Swans claimed the League Cup. Dzeko scored 15 goals for City last season, and has a total of 40 goals in 106 games for the former Premier League champions.
