Arsenal line up Michu or Dzeko as Suarez back-up plan

Arsenal will approach Swansea City for Michu or Manchester City for Edin Dzeko if they miss out on the signing of Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, the Daily Mail has reported.

The Gunners have had two offers rejected for the Uruguay international and are still considering a third, closer to Liverpool’s £50m price tag, but have started to put in place contingency plans should the Reds stand firm in their stance that Suarez is not for sale.

Arsenal previously wanted Stevan Jovetic or Gonzalo Higuain but missed out in both cases, the former joining Manchester City and the latter moving to Napoli, as manager Arsene Wenger made Suarez his primary candidate for the summer. Arsenal were said to be very close to completing the move for Jovetic, only to back away when Suarez appeared on their radar.

Wayne Rooney was briefly considered by Wenger but it is Michu and Dzeko the manager has made his Plan B, the Mail adds. In his first season in the Premier League, Michu, 27, scored 18 goals, netting a total of 22 in all competitions as the Swans claimed the League Cup. Dzeko scored 15 goals for City last season, and has a total of 40 goals in 106 games for the former Premier League champions.
