Barcelona have made an offer for Chelsea’s Brazil international centre-back David Luiz, the
Chelsea have previously insisted Luiz is not for sale this summer but Barca haven’t been deterred, offering just under £34.5m for the former Benfica defender. The newspaper believes Chelsea will turn down the approach from the Catalans as the Blues indicated to Bayern Munich – who also registered an interest in Luiz, although not an official bid – that it would take £52m to tempt them into selling.
Luiz is not said to be looking to leave Chelsea but would agree to move to Spain if the clubs agreed terms, the Telegraph adds. He would also only leave Stamford Bridge for a move abroad and has no intention of playing for another Premier League club, having spent the past two-and-a-half years in west London. Chelsea paid Benfica £21.5m and Nemanja Matic for Luiz’s signature.
If Chelsea do consent to Luiz’s sale and he moves to Barcelona, it is expected that Jose Mourinho will attempt to replace the defender with Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala, but only if the Portuguese club climb down from their insistence that Mangala will only leave for the fee stipulated in his contract – £42m. Chelsea hope to pay around £21m and believe Porto are moveable.
