Barcelona turn to Liverpool defender Agger after giving up on Chelsea’s Luiz

Barcelona will attempt to persuade Liverpool to part with Daniel Agger, the Daily Mirror has reported, despite having their interest in the Denmark international rejected once before. Barca have returned for Agger after being priced out of a move for Chelsea’s David Luiz.

Roman Abramovich refused to let Luiz leave Stamford Bridge for anything less than £40m, the newspaper adds, with the belief that Agger would cost substantially less than Luiz despite Liverpool’s reluctance to sell.

A centre-back is the priority this summer for the Spanish champions and Barca thought they could swoop for Luiz when it appeared Bayern Munich were closing in on the Brazil international; instead Chelsea hardened their resolve and refused to let the former Benfica player leave unless their lofty asking price was met in full.

Agger has been at Anfield since 2006 after leaving Brondby, with the 28-year-old making more than 200 appearances for the Reds. In that time he has scored 12 goals and won the FA Cup, League Cup and Community Shield. Agger also has 56 caps for his country to his name.
